Washington (CNN) The Republican National Committee on Monday night blasted President Barack Obama for proposing $4 trillion for a border wall, saying the administration’s plans “would take a giant step backward” for the United States.
The RNC’s statement comes as Trump has been calling for a $10 trillion wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The president’s proposal includes $4 billion for a wall along a 3,000-mile stretch of the U, and $6 billion for other border infrastructure projects.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that Mexico will pay for the wall.
The administration has said it does not expect to raise the U’s borrowing limit.
But Trump’s campaign on Monday said it would pay for a 1,000 mile wall with “money from the federal government.”
The GOP statement said Obama’s proposed $4,5 trillion plan “would put the United Nations Security Council on notice that we are serious about securing our borders and stopping illegal immigration.”
